College Grants And The Approval Process By David Pierce

When seeking a career opportunities, it is almost a given that one needs a higher form of education. It is a proven fact that those whom possess a college degree make significantly more than those that hold a GED or high school diploma. They often make at least 50% to as much as 100% more than their non-degree counterparts.

One of the biggest factors though in obtaining a college degree is financing. There are many obstacles to overcome when attempting to pay for your college education. Depending on where the student attends, it could cost as much as $50,000 per year. This is much more than the family median income in many states. There are many parents who actually believe it is not their responsibility to finance a child’s education, though they state its importance and urge them to attend. It can be difficult for a student to get financial aid if their parents make too much money. This creates a burden on the prospective student on where to get financing.

This is where federal grants come in to play. Because the government puts a high emphasis on education, it has put aside a large proportion of its budget to help get students the money they need and deserve as long as they are qualified. This is a great way to help ease the burden a college education can place on the family. Grants usually do not have to be paid back as long as the student maintains a minimum grade point average and stays drug free. They are also tax free, so the student or their family will not have to pay income taxes on them. They are generally low on the requirements as far as strings attached. There are possibly other restrictions depending on the type of grant available to them, there are over 1500 government grants, whether they be city, state or federal, available to the student.

There is a education grant that caters to about every student situation whether they are going for an undergraduate degree or graduate degree. Also, there are many grants available for homeless veterans and veterans that need to renter the workforce. There are too many options available to those who qualify than can be listed here.

Finding a grant is relatively easy. You can go to the government website cfda.gov to find a listing of available grants. You will need to do a detailed search to find out ones that you may be qualified for. This website will give you information on writing grant proposals and as well as new programs and tips on qualifying for assistance. It also mentions new programs and offers a historical index on what grants were awarded. Though these are federal grants only, there are literally thousands of other state, private and local grants that the prospective student may be eligible for. If you have a special need or are in a special circumstance, there is usually a grant that will fit that situation. Grants may also be found if you go to the school and ask them, a lot of times they will have information that will guide you in the right direction. Though they usually will not have or know everything that is available to the student.

Before applying for the grant, basic qualifications include that the student be in a family that pays taxes, or pays taxes themselves and be a lawful United States citizen. There may be differences in this requirement, but generally speaking, this rings true. You will need to apply for a Free Application for Student Financial Aid at your school. This will determine what federal grants you are eligible for. You usually do not have to write a proposal for this sort of grant, it is done automatically through the students school. The amount of the Pell grant is determined by your actual need and the information that you submit on your form.

Although applying for a grant can be easy at times, or time consuming at other times, it is always worth the effort if you are approved for the grant. There are varying degrees of complexity in the grant process. Sometimes it is as easy as filling out a Federal Student Aid paper or as difficult as filling out extreme amounts of paperwork and writing a detailed proposal. In the end, the prospective student needs to take their time, do what is required and hope for the best.

The Secret to Scholarship Success By Cathy Gullo

With rising college costs, continuing inflation, and narrowing job markets; students all over the U.S. are seeking a variety of options for college financing. In many cases, the attainment of a scholarship is the difference in whether a student attends college or not. Scholarships are available from many sources, but knowing how to qualify and be selected as the recipient of a specific scholarship is the big question for most students and parents.

The key to winning college scholarships is through proper planning and taking the appropriate actions at the right time. Some tips for being successful are as follows:

Start Early to ready yourself. Building academic and personal credentials takes time. Transcripts reveal academic achievements from the 9th to the l2th grades, so the 9th grade is a good starting point for high grades and test-taking success. Yet, acquiring a foundation for learning begins earlier in elementary school. The higher the G.P.A. and the higher the SAT/ACT scores the better your chances for scholarships.

Get Involvedin school and community activities. Good grades are important, but college and scholarship committees have many applicants with outstanding G.P.A.’s and test scores. Leadership, involvement, and community service show a student’s potential, diversity, and concern for others.

Find Scholarship Sources. Securing sources for scholarships is much easier today because of computer technology. Go to college web sites, on-line web sites, high school guidance offices, college financial aid offices or libraries. These sources are readily available at no cost. However, sources are just sources. A source is only as good as the person using it. Seek professional guidance help, if needed.

Showcase Yourself with a Resume. Resumes show your personal credentials, academic achievements, honors and awards, school activities, community service, leadership, special skills, and career objectives.A well-balanced and eye-appealing resume catches the attention of scholarship committees and gets you invited to interviews.

Let Your Application Show the Best of You. Follow directions exactly, complete the application fully, adhere to proper grammar and spelling, and show extreme concern for neatness. Applications can have a positive impact.

Reference Letters are a vital part of scholarship success. Notice that scholarships usually require references. Remember that you determine the content of your reference letters. Your character, manners, and reputation allow a person writing the reference letter to acknowledge your strengths to scholarship committees. Also, your selection of people who write the letters is as important as the reference letters.

College Essays are often the winning edge of a college application or scholarship competition. Essays give you a chance to shine and let you introduce yourself to decision-making committees. A great essay gets the attention of the reader and leaves a lasting impression of you.

Remember that it takes time and hard work to secure scholarships. Finding scholarship money and keeping yourself out of debt is well worth your time and energy.

Grants for Education

When we think about grants, the first thing that comes to the first thing that comes to mind for many of us is education. This is not just due to the fact that there are a lot of grants available for education. It is due to the fact that this concept has been with us for quite some time now. It has given departments and students alike areas to venture into, areas that apart from the grant they would never have entered.

Types of Education Grants

There are many types of grants provided by the government, non-profit organisations as well as within the private sector. There are education grants available for children as well as for adults.

For example, there is the Toshiba America Foundation that provides grants that will help K-12 students in the areas of Mathematics and Science. On the other hand, there is also the Citi Group Foundation they provide grants for those who are pursuing a course (studies) in Financial Education.

There are also other areas of studies that they provide grants in.

Online Application

In the United States of America, the US Department of Education has provided e-Application (On-line) to assist in the application for grants. Therefore by using this avenue your application will be delivered to the correct department. Along with that it will reach the department a lot quicker.

By applying online you will also be given access to certain areas that normally you would have had to call or email about. By that I mean you will have access to your profile among other things along that same line. So seeking out organisations that provides grants for education online will be helpful to you in more case than one.

Other Organisations

The government, as I have alluded to before is not the only organisation that provides education grants. There are non-profit organisations as well as foundations that does this. The Annenbery Foundation as well as the Albertson is just a few such agencies.

Different Types

Education grants are made available to both individuals as well as to organisations. Therefore, when checking out education grants, it is a good idea to be certain about the type of grant and to whom the grant is being offered.

Use your Situation

Education grants are also offered to certain groups of people. For example, the African American Success Foundation speaks for itself. Therefore it goes without saying that those who are African American and are in need of an education grant in the areas that this foundation deals with, should be taking a look here. I will also add that paying close attention to the persons that a grant is been offered to will save you a lot of time and energy.

There are also education grants that are specifically for women. For example, the Altruse Foundation offers grants to women who are living in “third world countries”; and desire to study in one of the collages in the United States of America that the Foundation is satisfied with.
